Your mission:
Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age. An endless stream of luxury goods from the Dutch colonies flows through the canals and onwards across Europe. The promise of quick riches draws countless daring adventurers like you to this great centre of trade. A ship belonging to the powerful Dutch East India Company is about to set sail and is looking for adventurers willing to face the dangers of the open sea. This is your chance! But the sea demands a price. Anyone wishing to join the crew must first pass a series of trials requiring a keen sense of direction, speed and, above all, courage. Twelve-year-old Jan also dreams of escaping the misery of Amsterdam’s poorest district. But time is running out: the ship sets sail in just two hours. Can you work together to pass the captain’s trials before the Morning Star leaves the harbour?

Immersion through experience
Learning without even realising it!
The story of the game is rooted in Amsterdam’s real history and introduces students to the city’s rise as one of Europe’s most important centers of trade. What was it like to live in a city shaped by merchants, ships and goods arriving from across the world? And how did the Dutch East India Company grow into a global trading power? The game also explores the darker side of Dutch colonial history, showing students where this immense wealth came from and who paid the price for it. Through interactive riddles, decisions and teamwork challenges, students do more than simply read about history. They step into it, experience different perspectives and discover how Amsterdam’s global success was built.
Taking initiative & solving problems
Pass the Captain’s trials
Guided by instructions on their smartphones, students navigate through Amsterdam’s historic trading district, completing the Captain’s challenges along the way. They use historical tools and clues to prove themselves worthy, but they must also think critically, weigh difficult choices and face real moral dilemmas. After discovering what joining the crew truly means, will they still want a place aboard, even after everything they have done to get there?
based on true stories
